Regarding the Other Voices by Jill Sonnenberg, Wednesday, Dec. 2: Ms. Sonnenberg argues that she directs her students at Nevada Union High School to the public library on a daily basis. Mr. Frank Pezzanite, CEO of LSSI in a recent opinion article said the library would increase its hours of operation. Therefore, I would think Ms. Sonnenberg's students would have more access to the library. She also is concerned about losing the qualified, educated staff currently employed by the library. Mr. Pezzanite of LSSI stated in his article that all personnel at the library would be offered jobs at their current rate of payment. I would assume in these times that all would be eager and happy to retain their jobs.
And, what? Ms. Sonnenberg is concerned “whether a private corporation would ever be able to maintain the positive working relationship between the library and our public schools.” Apparently she thinks only public entities can work with public entities. Oh, please!
I suspect that the root of the anti-privatization of our library is that the same level of benefits will not be offered that the county does. Ms. Sonnenberg wants the county board of supervisors to not privatize “... at any cost.” How selfish is that considering shortfalls in many counties and even bankruptcy in at least one instance (Vallejo).
I think privatization of our libraries is the best option and I encourage our board to do just that.
