A Nevada County man was under psychiatric observation this week after an incident that drew a large response from law enforcement.
A man who allegedly was bipolar and off his medication broke into the home of Greg Cook, owner of the popular Nevada City restaurant Friar Tuck's, according to Cook and Nevada County Sheriff's dispatch reports.
“It was the most insane thing,” Cook said. “It was like a movie.”
Cook and his wife, Rona, had left their house in the 10000 block of Murchie Mine Road Tuesday afternoon for no more than an hour, he estimated.
“We came home to nine sheriff's cars and fire engines surrounding my house,” Cook said.
The man, who was not identified, allegedly was up on the roof, naked.
“He was preaching Isaiah,” Cook said, referring to the Old Testament prophet who warned Israel of destruction and told of the coming Messiah.
The incident drew a massive response from local law enforcement due to fears of a hostage situation, Cook added.
The man apparently used several large conch shells to break though a plate glass door in the back and then “trashed the place,” Cook said.
“He picked up a love seat and threw it over the balcony,” he said.
The man also damaged televisions, stereos and computers, and bled “all over the place,” Cook said. “My house is
a wreck.”
It took several deputies to subdue him, Cook said, adding the man was taken to the hospital. It was not clear whether he would be charged for the vandalism and trespassing.
