Donation Day enters 126th year Friday

Demand for donated food this year is expected to rise as unemployment remains high in California, and, for the 126th straight year, Grass Valley will look to its own school children to help out.

The 126th installment of the Donation Day Parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 18 in Grass Valley's downtown. Each year the parade raises money and collects food for families who could use a hand this holiday season.

The Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society put on the first parade in 1883, collecting potatoes and firewood for the families of down-on-their luck miners, said Debbie Luckinbill, a representative with the society.

This year the parade includes children from the Hennessy Elementary School, Mt. Saint Mary's school and Scotten Elementary, who will march alongside local emergency responders from Hennessy's campus on 225 South Auburn Street north along Mill Street before turning east along Main Street and back toward the school along Auburn Street.

They'll march to assist 160 families identified by the Salvation Army, and tables will be set up along the parade route to collect both food and cash donations, Luckinbill said.

“We're expecting full usage of the program this year,” Luckinbill said, adding demand for help is up due to the down economy.

To help out, bring a donation by the parade route where tables will be set up, to Hennessy Elementary or mail monetary donations to the Grass Valley Ladies Relief Society at PO Box 1132, Cedar Ridge, CA, 95924.
