Glenn Alexander Gryte died Nov. 20 of cancer. He was 87.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 12889 Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley.
He was the first-born child of Alex and Emma Gryte, American citizens farming in Canada. His family moved to Los Angles when he was 3.
He attended Huntington Park High School, where he lettered in basketball, and played violin in a string quartet and local orchestra.
Upon graduation in 1940, studied at Compton Junior College.
Mr. Gryte joined the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Camp Kohler. In Nov. 1942, he transferred to the Army Medical Corps and became a blood cross-match specialist. He served in France and Belgium, returning home to New York Harbor on Dec. 16, 1945.
He returned to college and studied medicine on the GI bill. He graduated in 1953 with a degree in medicine.
After graduating, Dr. Gryte started his own practice in general medicine in Riverside. In 1954, he took overa general practice in Sunrise, Wyo. In 1957, he returned to Los Angeles where he took up a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. In 1960, he started his own ob-gyn practice in Boulder, Colo.
He practiced in Boulder, Colo. from 1960 to 1972. From there, he moved to Taipei, Taiwan, to open a school of obstetrics and gynecology for Chinese residents.
During his career, he delivered more than 6,000 babies.
In 1993, he retired to Nevada County. Dr. Gryte played first violin with the Grass Valley Community Orchestra for 14 years and with the Arthur Gould String Quartet for eight years.
Dr. Gryte is survived by his wife Silva; daughters Connie Needles, Judy Gryte, Susan Younker, Rosemary McDaniel; sons Gary Gryte, Garth Gryte and Gary Guymon; brother Norval Gryte; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
