There is so much going on in Lake Wildwood in December that it is hard to keep track of everything.
It seems that each of the 30 clubs is having a holiday lunch or dinner-dance. Add to that the many folks who have family coming in for the holidays and the intense volunteer activities going on this month, and you have a high-energy holiday season in LWW.
Many LWW residents have just wrapped up their participation in the 18th Annual Nevada County Food and Toy Run held Saturday, the Friends of Hospice Tree of Love celebration held Thursday, and the Ho Ho Ho Angel “adopt a family for Christmas” program for Women of Worth this week.
But it is not too late to jump in and spread some holiday cheer to the less fortunate inbetween the many parties and activities.
Interfaith Food Ministry:
A large group of LWW residents volunteer weekly and are deeply committed to Interfaith Food Ministry (IFM) and are eager to tell you about “Operation Turkey.” For a $10 donation to IFM, a needy family in western Nevada County will receive a holiday turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
Checks can be made payable to IFM and mailed to Interfaith Food Ministry, Operation Turkey, P.O. Box 1174, Grass Valley, CA 95945. Due to the economy and the loss of jobs, there has been a significant increase in local residents coming into IFM to pick up free food and to learn which churches are serving free meals.
See's Candy:
A number of LWW residents have volunteered to help Child Advocates of Nevada County sell See's Candy in the Pine Creek Shopping Center next to the Dollar Tree in Grass Valley. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day through Christmas Eve. Everyone loves See's Candy, so why not share a little sweetness while supporting Child Advocates in their efforts to reduce the impact of abuse and neglect on children in our county.
LWW committees:
Besides nonprofits, there are also volunteer opportunities in the very community that fills our lives with beauty, good friends and lots of activities.
Several LWW committees will have openings in January, including community relations, election, environmental management, golf, lake, planning, public works, recreation, tennis, social, and TV advisory.
This is a great way to get to know some of the other residents and to learn how LWW functions.
Members in good standing who are interested in serving on a committee should submit an application by 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8. A Standing Committee Handbook is in the Admin Office if you have questions about the duties of committee members.
Library art exhibits:
The Penn Valley Library is a hub of local activity, and this fall the LWW Art Club donated their services to paint a wall in the library for local art exhibitions.
LWW artists worked with library staff to make this happen and the first exhibit featured longtime LWW artist JoAnn Hager, who created abstract designs made from colorful bits of paper in interesting shapes.
The second and current exhibition features Yvonne Roberson and her brilliant, impressionistic landscapes. The exhibit runs through Jan. 5.
