Christmas bicycles roll off assembly line:
Volunteers gathered recently at the Grass Valley Veterans Hall with their tool boxes in tow, set themselves up in assembly lines and put together about 100 bicycles. The bikes will be given as Christmas gifts to needy kids in Nevada and Placer counties as part of the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.
Generous donors include Grass Valley Inc., TGH Aviation and Waste Connections, according to organizer David Voors. Thanks also to the fine volunteers from the Friends of Nevada County Military, the Nevada County Sheriff's Office and to the experts at Tour of Nevada City, who put the finishing touches on the bikes.
“Cash back” beware:
Several readers have sent in warnings concerning a scam that seems to be multiplying with the holiday shopping rush. They report discovering receipts — typically at large discount stores out of the area — suggesting they asked for cash back from a purchase when they did not, nor received any.
The cashier ringing up the purchase would then be able to pocket the unsolicited money, making a neat profit during his or her shift.
Children needed by Santa's Helpers:
Santa's Helpers at Chris' Collision Repair in Grass Valley are looking for families in need.
Children can write letters to Santa at P.O. Box 906, Grass Valley, CA 95945. The helpers will screen the letters and respond with gifts.
To help with a tax-deductible donation, send a check to Santa's Helpers, 13113 John Bauer Avenue, Grass Valley, CA 95945. Chris' Collision will match the first $1,000 in donations.
This dog needs his day:
An old German shepherd at the Nevada County Animal Shelter needs some extra love. The pooch is isolated, with bad hip dysplasia, and can't get up or walk without assistance. The shelter is paying for meds to keep him comfortable, but Ol' Shep is lonely, and would appreciate visitors to come and keep him company.
If you're able, it would be a great help to adopt him, so he wouldn't have to spend his remaining time, however short, in a shelter.
The Nevada County Animal Shelter is at 14647 McCourtney Road in Grass Valley.
Christmas light guide:
Do you have beautiful holiday lights you want to share? Does your neighborhood have a must-see display?
The Union will publish the addresses in a coming edition; send them to City Editor Trina Kleist at tkleist@theunion.com or call (530) 477-4230.
