A drunken man allegedly trying to start a fight in North San Juan ended up in custody Friday morning on drunken driving and drug charges.
A caller from the 29000 block of Highway 49 reported at 12:24 a.m. Friday that a man, identified as Michael John Barilla, 36, was hitting other vehicles with his vehicle and telling people he had a gun.
Barilla, of Penn Grove, was reported to be driving a Volkswagen van in an erratic fashion, said California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Wagner.
Several people at a neighboring bar had their guns because they didn't know what Barilla was going to do, the caller said.
According to the caller, Barilla was trying to start a fight, was spinning “Brodies” and being aggressive.
Several people apparently then restrained Barilla and took his car keys after patting him down. They did not find a gun, but did take a pocket knife that was attached to his keychain, the caller reported.
CHP officers determined Barilla was intoxicated and arrested him at the scene, Wagner said, A search of the van turned up a large amount of packaged marijuana and a small amount of suspected LSD and methamphetamine, he said.
Barilla was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol content more than .08, possessing marijuana for sale, hit-and-run resulting in property damage, and possession of controlled substances.
He was being held in Nevada County jail in lieu of $12,329 bail.
