Now in its second season, the Foothill Children's Chorus offers two performances of its 2009 Christmas Concert.
The concerts are Saturday, Dec. 12, and Wednesday, Jan. 6. The January concert marks the Feast of the Epiphany, also known as Twelfth Night. Both are at 7 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 828 W. Main St., Grass Valley.
Foothill Children's Chorus is a nonprofit music program for children in second through eighth grades, directed by Catherine Dowling.
Their music is quite challenging, involving several languages, and the children are very young. From my perspective as both a parent and a musician, it is impressive, indeed, and shows what can be done with a purposeful vision and educational skill.
Selections will include classics such as Bach's “Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring” and Schubert's “Ave Maria,” as well as contemporary pieces, including Richard Wienhorst's setting of William Blake's “The Lamb.”
Performances also will include a medieval miracle play recounting the story of the Nativity in 13th and 14th century carols from Germany
The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for students and children, and are available at the Book Seller, Nevada City Postal Company and Peace Lutheran Church. Call (530) 274-2909.
Melinda Douros is a Nevada County resident, and will play the flute during the concerts.
