Food and Toy Run helps local families in need

The holiday season is upon us, and you can feel the magic in the air.

While you are in the shopping spirit, consider sharing the magic and pick up a toy or two to donate to the 18th Annual Nevada County Food and Toy Run, a nonprofit organization and event to help local families in need.

Held on the second Saturday in December, the upcoming event on Dec. 12 could easily see more than 1,000 motorcycles participating in the escorted parade through downtown Nevada City and Grass Valley en route to the fairgrounds.

Hundreds of children and adults await their arrival, when families will receive a Christmas turkey, potatoes, canned goods and toys for the children.

For the eighth consecutive year, the LWW Motorcycle Club will participate in the event and has been endorsed by the Board of Directors to represent LWW.

For LWW residents who would like to contribute to this event, the club has set up specially marked bins in the administration office and at the North Gate below the security window where you can donate new, unwrapped toys and nonperishable foods until 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11.

Tax-deductible monetary donations may be made payable to Nevada County Food and Toy Run and mailed to P.O. Box 518, Penn Valley, CA 95946. For additional information, to arrange pick up of your donation, or to get a tax-deduction receipt for gifts, call Paul or Susan Piper at (530) 432-7758.

If you have yet to see this parade of “bikers,” you will not want to miss this amazing display of generosity and good will.

Many are dressed in Santa suits and loaded with toys; it will definitely fill you with holiday cheer. With luck, I will get to ride on one of these bikes, and I look forward to seeing you there.

Once at the fairgrounds, LWW Motorcycle Club members Will and Paulette Snyders, owners of Empire Horse and Carriage, will be on hand to offer horse-drawn carriage rides. Rides are free to the guest families; a nominal charge for visitors' rides will be donated back to the toy run.

Vendor booths set up by various charitable groups will offer treats.

Next meeting, new Web site:

On a different note, don't forget to check out the new LWW Web site, LakeWildwood.net.

It is easy to sign up and the site is loaded with information and growing daily. This is a good place to check out the schedule for the 2010-11 budget meetings; from the menu on the home page, go to Resources, then Documents, then Budget Calendar.

The next open budget meeting is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Oak Room at the Community Center to prioritize community improvement projects for the next budget year. Check the Web site or pick up a copy of the schedule in the administration office for all meeting dates, locations, times and topics.
