Known throughout the Utah State University football program as the “Grass Valley trio,” James Brindley, Brennan McFadden and Chris Ulinski all took to the field for the final time in their college football careers Saturday.
And the former Nevada Union Miners went out with a bang, helping the Aggies to a 52-49 road win over the Idaho Vandals (7-4). The victory was the first win for Utah State on the road since 2007, snapping a 12-game road losing streak that started at Idaho in 2007.
McFadden (Nevada Union, '05), the Aggies starting senior center, and his fellow offensive linemen helped sophomore running back Robert Turbin to a school record-tying five touchdowns Saturday. Utah State's offense had its second-best outing of the season, rolling up 539 total yards.
Brindley (Nevada Union, '06), a senior safety, had nine tackles — six solo stops — for the Aggies and also recovered a fumble that set up Turbin's final touchdown of the day, which proved to be the difference maker down the stretch.
Ulinski (Nevada Union, '06), a senior placekicker, converted all seven point-after-touchdown kicks Saturday and also split the uprights on 48-yard field goal in the second quarter. Ulinski missed on a pair of field goal attempts — from 56 and 34 yards — but also booted five of his nine kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.
Utah State finished 4-8, its best record since 2002, for first-year coach Gary Andersen. The Aggies finished their WAC schedule with a 3-5 record.
