Why cut trees so far back?

What is the justification for such drastic clear cutting of our beautiful trees along Hwy. 49 between town and Alta Sierra? I realize the road is to be widened; however, I see no reason to cut trees so far back. It has certainly spoiled the beauty of the area and is enough to make one cry.
