The only proposal to fully manage the Nevada County Library System promises more hours while saving money.
The plan submitted by Library Systems and Services LLC also calls for rehiring all employees who want to return at their current salaries, according to CEO Frank Pezzanite.
But they would come back to fewer benefits.
LSS plans would save 7 percent from the library's adopted $2.5 million budget. Much of the
approximately $170,000 in savings comes from an employee benefits package that is not as lucrative as that offered by the county, which abides by union contracts.
“Our overall benefits package is not as rich as civil servants' benefits,” Pezzanite said this week from his Germantown, Md., office.
The firm offers health and life insurance and a 401K program in which the firm matches up to 10 percent of an employee's contribution.
Pezzanite is offering 14 percent more hours of library service. His proposal would open the libraries for 21.5 more hours per week, allow for Sunday openings and other hours that would bring the total to 200.5 hours per week, he said.
His plan also promises to sink $130,000 in capital improvements into the library system in new computers, software, lighting and a courier service to transport materials between facilities.
The only other proposal came from the Friends of Nevada County Libraries, which simply calls for running the Doris Foley Historical Library two days per week. Although it does not address the other five libraries, the Board of Supervisors has indicated that the proposal will be considered.
Library Associates Companies of Beverly Hills expressed interest in managing the system, but did not submit a proposal.
