Burglars use ‘old trick' to break into pharmacy

Several men broke into the CVS pharmacy at Lake of the Pines Thursday morning while another man attempted to divert law enforcement with a bogus phone call.

A 911 call was received at 2:29 a.m. from the 10000 block of Alta Sierra Drive from a hysterical man who said he was running down the road and people were shooting at him. Deputies was dispatched and found the pay telephone off the hook and no one around.

According to Nevada County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Powell, it was a false report in an attempt to divert all available patrol vehicles to one location while a burglary was taking place somewhere else.

“It's an old trick,” Powell said.

If the reports of shots being fired had been legitimate, the sergeant on duty would have sent all available units, Powell explained.

But because he was “cognizant of the fact it could be a lure,” Powell said, he opted against dispatching all deputies on duty.

Just five minutes later, multiple alarms went off at CVS Pharmacy, in the 10000 block of Combie Road.

Surveillance video from the store showed two men breaking in through the front window of the pharmacy and then breaking out the back window, Powell said.

“They didn't seem to get anything,” he said. “They probably were looking for Oxycontin, but that's all (kept) in a safe.”
