Longtime Nevada County government critic Bill Steele has announced plans to run for the soon-to-be vacant Treasurer-Tax Collector's position.
“I feel our county has gone completely haywire in 14 different directions,” Steele said while officially announcing his candidacy to The Union.
Steele said the back-to-back resignation announcements last week of Treasurer - Tax Collector Christina Dabis and Assessor Dale Flippin also bothered him.
Steele once ran for Congress and worked with the Jarvis-Gann group to get Proposition 13 passed in the late 1970s. The North San Juan businessman has been a frequent writer of letters to the editor of The Union.
Steele has been in contact with the county grand jury often with allegations about county government spending and practices. He has been particularly vocal about his disdain for how Sheriff Keith Royal runs his department.
Candidates for both offices can pull initial papers for office Jan. 4 at the county election office in the Nevada County Rood Center, 950 Maidu Ave., Nevada City.
