Eighty-four and 11.

That's the win-loss record Courtney Ceo and Katie Mathis have helped put together over the past three seasons with the Bear River softball squad, along with three Pioneer Valley League championships and three Sac-Joaquin Section titles, of course.

On Friday afternoon, two of the Bruins' top team players took a minute and allowed the spotlight to shine on themselves, as they each signed to play for Division I programs next fall.

The bad news for Bruin opponents, of course, is that the dynamic duo still has one high school season ahead of them. And they have every intention of trying to finish their fourth year with four league and section crowns.

“That's awesome, helping to get Bear River recognized,” said Mathis, a senior second baseman set to take the diamond for the San Diego State Aztecs next year. “It's how hard we worked and it's because of (Duane) Zauner and his great coaching. It's just awesome to be a part of this team.”

Zauner spoke highly of his shortstop-second base combo during Friday's luncheon, honoring the two top prospects. He said that the signings marked the first time two athletes from the same Bear River team earned Division I scholarships. And with Ceo signing with the University of Oregon, the Bruins believev to have their first Pac-10 signing in school history.

“We've done a lot with our hard work and drive toward success,” said Ceo, a senior shortstop. “Looking back, what I'll always remember though is the good times we've had. There wasn't a lot of drama. We just had a good time.”

Ceo has spent much of the offseason recovering from surgery to repair the ACL in her knee. She's just recently gotten back on the field to field ground balls and take batting practice.

“I'm glad to be finally back taking steps to being back on the field,” she said. “It still concerns me, whether I'll be as fast as I was before. But hopefully, with hard work, I'll be able to get back to where I was.”

Mathis spent much of her “offseason” with her traveling softball team, including earning 25th place at the 18-and-under nationals in Oklahoma. She said the team just finished its final tournament of the year two weeks ago, so she's enjoying some rare down time before gearing back up for a final run with the Bruins.

And that's something that certainly excites their head coach, who was beaming like a proud papa bear Friday.

“This is just a great day for us at Bear River,” Zauner said. “They've earned this and I couldn't be happier for them.
