Sunday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m.
The Gold Country Celtic Society will have a Kirkin' o' the Tartan at Trinity Episcopal Church in Nevada City. Rev. Christopher Seal will officiate, and music will be provided by the Trinity choir under the direction of Stan Thomas-Rose. Chief Mike Carr will play the bagpipes for the flag procession.
Guests are invited to bring some tartan or other item to be blessed. Following the service, a reception will be held in the church hall. All are welcome!
While the Kirkin' o' the Tartan celebrates Scottish heritage, it is truly a Scottish-American custom, begun by Scottish-American minister Rev. Peter Marshall in Washington D.C. after the Battle of Cullodan wearing the kilt and tartan was banned in the Highlands. Supposedly, the canny Scots hid pieces of tartan and brought them to the "kirk" or church to be secretly blessed by the pastor at a particular point in the service; hence "kirkin' o' the tartan.” Rev. Marshall gave a sermon entitled "Kirkin' o' the Tartans," and thus a legend was born.
Call 272-1316.

Captain John Oldham Chapter, DAR
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) has recently produced a video about the history of Memorial Continental Hall at the National Headquarters located in Washington D.C. Members of the local Captain John Oldham DAR Chapter make the trip every year to attend DAR Continental Congress and to do genealogical research in the world renowned library there. The auditorium of Memorial Continental Hall was the most elaborate room in the original building (construction began in 1904), echoing the monumental character of the exterior. Memorial Continental Hall was transformed into what is now the DAR Library. Deeply coffered arched ceilings span each of the original seating galleries. Box seats overlook the library and are capped by majestic outstretched American eagles clasping elaborate cartouches. The entire space is illuminated and ventilated by a glass and steel ceiling.
Within the shadow of the White House, the DAR complex is easily recognizable for its remarkable and historic edifice. What might be overlooked, however, is what resides within the beautiful buildings. Arts and artifacts, manuscripts and mementos, fabrics and furnishings, and personal possessions of patriots and their descendants all combine to form a rich collection of treasures that is available to the public. The collections of the DAR Museum, Library, and Americana Room offer a unique resource for researchers, genealogists, historians, and other visitors to the DAR complex.
For more information about National DAR, see the NSDAR general Web site, www.dar.org and for information about the local DAR chapter, please call 271-0926, or visit our Web site at www.californiadar.org/chapters/captjohnoldham/.

Monday's meeting proved once again to be a life lesson full of fun and fellowship. Kavitha Rapolu gave us some pointers on how to prevent identity theft. JoAnn Gonzales shared a personal story of how one person made a difference in her life. When we give in small ways, it has a huge impact and a ripple effect that makes a difference to many. Melissa Stevens won the Best Speaker award for her speech on “Cutting Your Anchor's Rope.” As she pointed out in a humorous and truthful way, we all have anchors that are holding us back and preventing us from moving forward.
Rob Rasch won the award for Best Table Topics. He spoke on what Veterans Day means to him. It was especially fitting as he is a Veteran and his son just went into the Marines. It can be intimidating to speak extemporaneously, but practice in a safe forum can help bring one out of their shell and build confidence.
Evaluations are essential for growth and improvement. There is an art to giving feedback in a way that's most receptive. Marjorie Quist gave just the right amount of encouragement and suggestions to help the speaker and she won the trophy for Best Evaluator.
