Jen Menary of Forest Lake Christian brought her hitters Morghan Pomeroy and Caitlin Hanson to the first round of the Sac-Joaquin section girls volleyball playoffs against Wilton Christian.
Forest Lake (9-3, 14-9) the No. 6 seed of the Central Valley Christian Conference defeated Wilton Christian (11-3, 13-9) the 11th seed, who represented the Harvest Christian League three games to one.
“The first two games we made very few errors,” Forest Lake coach Travis Smith said. “Our serving was tough, we hit and passed well.”
The first two sets Forest Lake won very easily 25-9 and 25-12. Menary consistently set the ball at or near the net for Pomeroy who finished the night with 16 kills and Hanson had 13.
“We can compete with anyone in the section as long as we play our game,” Smith said.
In the third set, Forest Lake Christian Falcons cleared its bench and played every varsity player.
“It is the first time I have ever done that,” Smith said.
Wilton was down eight to nothing in what looked like its final set of the playoffs, Hayley Arellano and Kendra Jeffcott took the next 11 points and the lead at 8 to 11.
Forest Lake received a Wilton serve and Menary set the ball for one of her 26 assists to Pomeroy for the kill. The very large front line of Wilton held on to the third set 25 -23.
“We played to our opponent,” Smith said. “We need to do a better job of communicating.”
Forest Lake closed out the game's fourth and final set 25 -19.
“I talked to Menary about getting Pomeroy and Hanson into the game,” Smith Said. “We can demoralize a team with their big hits.”
The Falcons were led by Pomeroy's seven blocks and ten digs, Christi Johnson's eight aces, Molly Huusfeldt's eight digs, five kills, and Leslie Johnson's three kills, five digs in the win.
The next game is Thursday, against either No. 3 seed Stone Ridge or the No. 14 seed Stocton Christian.
“Stone Ridge has a few tall girls and one of the better serving teams,” Smith said. “I'm proud of the girls and we would like to win the next game because we lost in the second round last year to Big Valley.”
Smith expects to win on Thursday regardless of who they play.
“The championship will go through Ripon and we would get them in our gym next week,” Smith said.
