Readers' Corner: Nov. 11, 2009

Honoring those who served our nation

Reader Joan Field recently visited Washington, D.C., and sends us this photo she took of the Iwo Jima Memorial —just in time for Veterans Day.

She also took another photo depicting U.S. Marines in the Vietnam War. The statues are in a grove of trees across from the Vietnam Memorial Wall. (You can see Joan's photo at TheUnion.com; click on today's Readers' Corner).

The memorials “honor the service of my father in the U.S. Navy in World War II and my brother, a Marine, in the Vietnam War, and all who served our country then and now,” Joan wrote.

She lives in the Nevada City area.

Purchases with a purpose

The Sisters of the Good Shepherd will be hosting HandCrafting Justice, a nonprofit sale of Fair Trade goods, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the next two weekends, Nov. 14-15 and 21-22.

It will be upstairs at Foothills Flowers, 102 W. Main St., downtown Grass Valley.

The event will feature inexpensive, quality items including scarves, dolls, purses and pottery made by women in 20 developing countries who desire to work hard to improve their lives, but with little opportunity to earn a living wage from their work.

HandCrafting Justice assists their efforts by marketing their unique, handcrafted goods at events like this one, and through their online store at HandCraftingJustice.org.

Northridge supports 4H

The Northridge Restaurant is stepping up to support 4H on Monday, Nov. 23, at their Nevada City location on 773 Nevada St.

The owners will donate 10 percent of their profits earned from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. to the Chicago Park 4H Club, the longest continually active 4H Club in California.

You may remember the club from their Independence Day fireworks booth in years past. The profits from the booth — their main source of income — benefited the county-wide 4H program in addition to providing for numerous other programs and community clubs in the area.

Readers' Corner is compiled by The Union staff. To submit items, e-mail them to readers@theunion.com, and put “RC” and your topic in the subject line, or call (530) 477-4230.
