A benefit dance party, silent auction and buffet will be held Saturday for the late Harmony Ridge resident Neal Clay.

Clay worked for historic preservationist LaVonne Mullin for 15 years, and got to know the tenants in Mullin's many historic buildings in Nevada City and Grass Valley.

When he learned he had terminal pancreatic cancer in September, he went to all of them and said good-bye.

“I just wanted to express my gratitude and my heartfelt thanks to you all for everything you have given me,” Clay wrote in a letter to friends and relatives.

“I always felt that I was blessed to see the inner beauty of the people I meet,” Clay wrote. “All of you have showed me how much beauty there is in the world.”

“He was such a wonderful guy,” said Mullin, of WCS Properties LLC. She called Clay “instrumental” to her detailed work to restore and upgrade her buildings and launch a new project creating new stores with an 1880s-era facade on East Main Street in downtown Grass Valley.

Clay, 52, died Oct. 19, leaving his wife, Pam, and grown children Mallory and Wes.

On Saturday, Mullin and others who knew Clay will hold a fundraiser to help his wife pay medical and other bills related to his care, and for living expenses.

The Bob Woods Trio and other local musicians will play at a dance party; a silent auction will offer items for sale; and local restaurants including Ike's Quarter Cafe, Sopa Thai Cuisine, Summer Thyme's Bakery and Deli, and South Pine Cafe will provide a catered buffet.

The event starts at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at St. Canice Hall, 236 Reward St. (off Zion Street), Nevada City. Tickets are $20; more information is at NealClay.com or (530) 265-4747.
