Joe and Jay Mathews (pictured) were recently honored by their four sons and families with a celebration dinner recognizing their 60th wedding anniversary. The dinner was at Villa Venezia in Grass Valley.
The next day, Joe and Jay departed for a week long stay at Lake Tahoe to complete their celebration.
Married in Napa on Oct. 16, 1949, they had first met when they were neighbors in the town of St. Helena in 1937.
Their families eventually moved to Napa where Joe and Jay both attended Napa Union High School, Joe graduating in 1947 and moving on to Junior College studies, and Jay graduating in 1949.
They raised a family of four sons, who have all been happily married for many years; Mike and Deanna, who reside in Carmichael, have been married for 37 years; Rick and Becky, of Roseburg, Ore., married 35 years; Ed and Carol, of Grass Valley, married 36 years; and Chris and Denise, of South Pasadena, married 17 years. In addition,
Joe and Jay have 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
It's been said that the Mathews men are like geese — they mate for life.
Joe and Jay first fell in love with Grass Valley in January 1969 when Joe was transferred to this area as a supervisor for Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Jay went to work for the SPD Market in Nevada City.
In 1972, three years later, Joe began a series of job transfers within the PG&E territory that lasted up to the time of his retirement. Although these transfers afforded them the opportunity to live in a number of different cities in California, once retired, they quickly returned to the Grass Valley area to live.
They feel very fortunate to be able to spend their retirement years in the area they love, Grass Valley.
