A sleuthing victim, a cordless phone and the proximity of the alleged thieves to the scene of the crime ended in the arrest of three people in connection with a Lake Wildwood burglary.
A homeowner in the 17000 block of Lake Forest Drive had reported the theft of several items from his home while he was out of town, said Nevada County Sheriff's Detective Jennifer Rimoldi. The burglars had taken an XBox, a computer — and a cordless telephone base that had become separated from its handset.
“The victim realized he still had a dial tone, so the phone base had to be close by,” Rimoldi said. “A cordless phone base will only cover a certain distance.”
The homeowner was savvy enough to realize that, if the phone base were plugged in, it would show the phone number of whoever had taken it, she explained.
“He called a family member and asked her, ‘What phone number do you see?'” Rimoldi said. “He gave the number to the Sheriff's Office, and we were able to locate the address.”
Sheriff's deputies served a search warrant on a home that also was in the 17000 block of Lake Forest Drive Thursday night, where they allegedly found some of the stolen property and a quantity of marijuana.
Ashley Amber Mrozowski, 23, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possession of more than 1 ounce of marijuana, and was being held in county jail in lieu of $25,500 bail.
Nikko Anthony Mrozowski, 18, was arrested on suspicion of burglary and was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
The tenant on the lease, Joseph Peter Cobb, 28, also was arrested in connection with the burglary and was released on $25,000 bond.
Another burglar, off Lower Colfax Road, allegedly was caught in the act Thursday.
A woman in the 14000 block of Brooks Road called 911 at 11:43 a.m. to report she interrupted a burglary in progress.
“He was in the house and was holding property in his hand. He was going through a closet,” said Nevada County Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Powell. “He dropped the item and left in a white van, but she got the plate.”
Deputies arrested Robert Kevin Finn, 60, on suspicion of burglary.
Finn told deputies he thought the house, which was in foreclosure, had been abandoned, Powell said.
Finn allegedly took items including an armoire, pots and pans, utensils, two cellular telephones, a DVD player, a flatscreen television, a mirror, motorcycle leathers, electric toothbrushes and $740 in cash.
The homeowner told deputies she might have been burglarized before, because she had noticed items missing, but did not file a report.
Finn remained in jail Friday in lieu of $25,000 bail.
