Experts in treating substance abuse will conduct a day-long workshop to help medical professionals better screen for substance abuse, do brief interventions and refer patients for treatment.
Skills learned in the workshop can be used for patients who abuse drugs or alcohol and who are in trauma centers, emergency rooms and primary health care settings.
Screening and brief intervention have been shown to reduce future re-injury and hospitalization.
The goal of the training is to teach health care professionals to screen their patients for alcohol and other substance abuse.
It's from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Outpatient Center, second floor conference room. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. Registration begins at 8 a.m.
The workshop, by the University of California Integrated Substance Abuse Programs and California Department of Alcohol and Drug Program, qualifies for continuing education credits through CSAM.
To register, call (310) 267-5408 or visit DrugFreeNevadaCounty.org.
