Yuba River Charter School (YRCS) is located at 13026 Bitney Springs road on a secluded campus surrounded by old growth towering ponderosa pine trees. The K-8 classrooms bubble with activities that use nature and hands-on experience for learning.
According to Melissa Seibold, development associate at YRCS, “Students learn to count by counting the leaves on a branch or the petals on a flower.”
The first grade classroom has a nature table with sand, rocks, acorns and pine cones. All toys in the early grades are wooden. No plastic toys. Students start learning Spanish in the first grade. No homework until the second grade. Everyone in the fourth grade plays the violin.
The seventh grade classroom has a student carved game based on Magellan's journey around the world. By the seventh grade, student learning results exceed other schools in the state in both language arts and math.
Teachers stay with their students as they progress through the first, second and third grades. These are credentialed teachers with training in the Waldorf curriculum which includes a long list of virtues like courage, compassion and humility.
The school content is powered by the arts which are presented in festivals and performances. Not a bad reason to turn out and make low bids on expensive items.
