The Sierra Central Credit Union had to temporarily closed due to an unknown odor that was irritating staff and customers.
A strange smell that caused eye irritations forced the evacuation of the Sierra Central Credit Union this morning for about two hours, but the facility has reopened for business.
A Nevada County Environmental Health emergency response unit came to the scene to help firefighters look for the cause.
Firefighters from Grass Valley, Nevada City and Nevada County searched the two-story building and its heating and cooling units on the roof to find the source of the odd odor, but came up empty according to credit union Manager Tamara Salas.
"We don't know what it was, we're going to have a technician come out and check it," Salas said.
Grass Valley Fire Department Battalion Chief Tom Browning said the cause of the smell might have been a bad light ballast in the office.
No other businesses were effected and they all remained open in the structure at the Brunswick Plaza Shopping Center on Sutton Way.
"Some people smelled it late yesterday and when we came in this morning, we could really smell it," Salas said, causing the trio to call the fire department and evacuate.
"Some people said it was a chemical smell and some said it smelled like burning wiring," Salas said.
Salas and her two employees were OK at the scene, but an emergency medical technician from Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital checked their vital signs to make sure.
