An $18,000 diamond and platinum ring is back with its owner after a Grass Valley man did some detective work.
Shane Hugill, 55, found the ring Sept. 21 in the parking lot of the Nevada County jail. He brought it to a jeweler, who identified the store where it was purchased from a serial number etched on the diamond.
He placed an ad in The Union in mid-October and fielded some fictitious calls before Dave and Dawn Gonsalves called and correctly identified it.
“It's almost too much to believe,” said Dave Gonsalves, 47, who purchased the ring for his wife less than a year ago. “I can't believe I got it back.”
Hugill, who is a self-employed construction worker and uses a metal detector as a hobby, said this was the best find he's made yet.
“I figured it would be good karma to try and find the rightful owner,” Hugill said.
