Chunk of ear allegedly bitten off in fistfight

A Grass Valley man remained in jail Monday after allegedly biting and nearly severing the ear of his victim at a Halloween party that turned bloody.

Michael James Stevens, 28, was arrested Sunday morning on suspicion of aggravated mayhem in the incident, which allegedly started at a party Saturday at the Odd Fellows Hall on South Church Street in downtown Grass Valley.

Stevens “was trying to start fights, and people at the party were trying to get him to leave,” said Grass Valley police Sgt. Joe Matteoni. “He tried to punch the victim, and the victim grabbed him to keep (from being punched). People were trying to pull them apart, and that's when the victim felt Stevens bite his ear.”

The back half of the victim's ear was severed and hanging by a strand of skin, according to the police report. The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, treated and released.

Stevens allegedly fled the scene and was arrested at his Catherine Lane home.

He remains in Nevada County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Brown was arrested after a tip to the sheriff's crime tip line and later was released on $50,000 bail.

Jeffrey David Glenn, 41, began serving a 300-day jail sentence on Oct. 16 after pleading no contest to lewd or lascivious acts with a child younger than 14.
