The winner of a Vespa raffled off to benefit The Union's Newspapers in Education program is Carol Kellermann, on the scooter donated by Sue Johnson, left, owner of Sierra Motor Sports on Nevada City Highway.
Carol Kellermann of Grass Valley was the winner of a yellow Vespa in the raffle at The Union's recent Fall Home and Harvest Festival.
Kellermann heard about her prize on Oct. 19.
“I have never won anything in my life!” she said when she got the news.
Kellermann still has to learn how to ride the scooter.
The 2007 Vespa LX 50 was donated by Sue and Wayne Johnson of Sierra Motor Sports. It can reach speeds of 40 mph and gets 90 miles per gallon.
Kellermann helps run a medical mission to the Batwa people in Uganda with her husband, Dr. Scott Kellermann.
The former Nevada County resident recently bought a vacation home in Downieville, where the Vespa will await the Kellermann's return in about three months, she said
The raffle raised $3,400 for The Union's Newspapers in Education program.
Fifty classrooms around the county participate in Newspapers in Education. Most receive one newspaper per student per week, and teachers use the papers for literacy and current events assignments.
