Two puppies have died at the Nevada County Animal Shelter in a pair of parvovirus outbreaks since July, according to Sgt. Rich Fevinger, who manages the facility.
“The whole shelter was contaminated with parvo,” Fevinger said, using the street name for parvovirus.
“We've had to scrub the shelter daily and the only way to kill it is with bleach, we've been disinfecting for weeks and we still are,” Fevinger said. “The staff can't remember a parvo outbreak here,” until now.
Parvo is an extremely contagious and serious disease according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
“It's huge and highly contagious among the puppy population, that's why it's important to vaccinate,” Fevinger said.
Despite the outbreaks, it's still safe to adopt a dog at the shelter on McCourtney Road, Fevinger said.
“We're holding on to puppies until we know they safe to adopt out,” Fevinger said. “The adults who are vaccinated are already OK for adoption,” he added. “People won't take the virus home with them from here.”
