Sanders gets 90 days in drugs and weapons case

Brandon Sanders, a Peardale resident now living in Oregon, pleaded no contest to reduced drugs and weapons charges and is set to serve 90 days in jail in January.

Sanders, 32, was arrested in late December 2008 after a tip that he was dealing drugs out of his home resulted in officers discovering a stash of marijuana and guns, including an illegally modified assault rifle.

The Nevada County narcotics task force first served a warrant on the house on the 15000 block of Avery Way, where Sanders was found to have prescription drugs without a prescription.

Inside, investigators found a 12-gauge shotgun, six boxes of 12-gauge shotgun rounds and a magazine for an AR-15 rifle. The searchers also discovered a trap door to the basement, where they found evidence of a prior indoor marijuana-growing operation.

Deputies also searched a storage unit rented by Sanders, where they found a 20-gauge shotgun, a .22-caliber revolver and a Colt AR-15 that had been modified illegally. They also found 20 pounds of marijuana buds with an approximate value of $60,000, as well as scales and other sales paraphernalia.

Sanders was charged with possessing controlled substances without a prescription, having marijuana for sale and having an assault weapon.

On Sept. 29, he pleaded no contest to a a misdemeanor charge of possessing an assault weapon and possession of a controlled substance and the other charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and was fined $560. He also was required to forfeit the AR-15, and the marijuana that had been seized was to be destroyed.

Sanders previously made the pages of The Union in April 2005, when he was shot in the buttocks by an unknown assailant. In that case, deputies allegedly found three large bags of marijuana and a wad of cash near Sanders.
