New taxi service seeks Nevada City business license

A new Grass Valley-based taxi service is applying for a license to operate in Nevada City.

Gold Country Cab and Courier started Aug. 20 and services the twin cities equally, owner Jamie Howell said.

Her fleet consists of two silver, 1990s-era Chevrolet Astro vans that transports senior citizens to doctors' appointments by day and shuttles groups of tipsy bar-hoppers by night.

“The taxi business sounded like it would be something interesting,” said Howell, 28, a first-time taxi operator who grew up in the area. “It would be helping people.”

Business likely will pick up as the winter sets in and people decide against walking to bus stops in the cold, Howell added.

Gold Country Cab and Courier and Fast Taxi also operate in western Nevada County.

Municipal code calls for a Nevada City license because the business picks up and drops off riders and packages within city limits, according to a memo from Nevada City Attorney Hal DeGraw.

Nevada City Council members will vote to approve or deny the license at their meeting starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 317 Broad St., downtown. To read the complete agenda, visit TheUnion.com and click on this story.

Gold Country Cab and Courier can be reached at 274-TAXI.
