Cathy English, left, of Lucchesi Vineyards & Winery in Grass Valley, Cathy Anderson-Meyers of the Barbara Schmidt Millar Celebration of Life Women's Triathlon, and Linda Clough, also of Lucchesi, take part in a ceremony at the winery Tuesday.
In the Spanish-speaking world, the last drops from a bottle of wine are called “the drops of happiness.”
The last cases of a special bottling of wine are bringing happiness to efforts in western Nevada County to prevent, detect and treat breast cancer.
Lucchesi Vineyards & Winery Inc. wrote a check Tuesday for $2,026.47 to the Barbara Schmidt Millar Celebration of Life Women's Triathlon for a specially labeled red table wine the winery sold. Triathlon organizer Cathy Anderson-Meyers accepted the check at the Lucchesi tasting room in downtown Grass Valley.
The memorial athletic event, held every year at Scotts Flat Lake east of Nevada City, saw 462 participants during the September gathering and raised $40,000, Anderson-Meyers said.
Award-winner Lucchesi labeled 200 cases of wine to benefit the triathlon three years ago, selling it for $20 per bottle. One case of the wine is left for sale at the store, at 167 Mill St., downtown Grass Valley. Another couple of cases will be available at the Paint the Town Pink event from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the main building (inside Gate 1) of the Nevada County Fairgrounds.
Joanne's Jams made jelly out of some of the wine; all of the jelly has been sold to benefit the cause.
