Strong wind advisory until 11 p.m.

The cold front that blew into Nevada County from the north overnight will bring strong winds and a slight chance of rain to the foothills today, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

Early this morning the weather service issued a wind advisory for the Sierra and the Nevada County foothills, with winds up to 35 mph and gusts up to 50 mph expected until 11 p.m. tonight.

Winds are expected to pick up again Wednesday but not as strong.

Snow levels are expected to drop to 3,500 feet this morning, but no heavy accumulation is predicted.

Strong, gusting winds with scattered snow showers are also expected today into Wednesday morning in the high Sierra.

Mountain travelers should be equipped with snow chains, warm clothing and flashlights for mountain passes for the two days of expected storms, the weather service said.

High temperatures in the foothills will reach the mid-50s during the cold snap, and lows are expected in the mid- to upper 30s tonight and Wednesday night.

Warmer weather is expected to return Thursday with sunny to partly cloudy skies predicted through the weekend. Highs are expected in the lower 60s, with nighttime lows in the low to mid-40s.

Friday will see a slight chance of foothill showers.
