The Grass Valley organizations, Knights of Columbus No. 1875 and Elks Lodge No. 538 are fortunate to have resident Bill Dobbins.
This World War II veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor donated his time to help these charitable organizations and has made a personal commitment to help others by collecting and fixing items that help those in need.
At 89, the Grass Valley resident uses an electric scooter and a walker himself because his back was crushed while serving his country in his lifelong career in the U.S. Navy.
Dobbins recently presented an electric scooter on behalf of the Knights, who funded the cost of the repair, to Tammy Marlow, 45, who lives in Oroville.
For five years, Tammy has been fighting a progressive case of multiple sclerosis. Her husband, David, said he has had both of his shoulders almost torn off helping her with her wheelchair and walker. They both appreciate this helpful donation.
It was a joy to watch Tammy Marlow smile as she learned how to drive her new transporter — a speedster compared to her wheelchair. She said no one is going to touch any of the “cute” stickers that decorate it.
Dobbins has at his home two electric scooters, one wheel chair and one walker looking for someone in need to put them to good use. All are in excellent shape.
The next scooter will be donated in the name of the Elks. Those with a sincere need or those with items to donate can contact Dobbins, who will get the items repaired and donate them to a needy person. He can be reached at (530) 273-1550.
E. Frank Santos is a member of Knights of Columbus No. 1875 in Grass Valley. He produces a monthly newsletter for the lodge, which can be seen at KofC1875.org.
