An alert deputy foiled a marijuana sale and put a Smartsville man in jail on a bevy of charges early Friday morning after wondering why he was at a park and ride lot at night time.
Deputy Matt Dillon was patrolling about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, when he saw a vehicle in the lot at Highway 20 and the Rough and Ready Highway, according to Sheriff Keith Royal.
Dillon pulled in next to the vehicle, and noticed Brent A. Fellows, 38, inside. When Dillon approached the vehicle, “the man's eyes were bloodshot and he smelled of alcohol,” Royal said.
Fellows told Dillon he had been drinking in a Grass Valley bar and realized he was too intoxicated to drive, so he pulled over in the parking lot on his way home, Royal said.
The deputy then noticed two rifles in the vehicle and a Mason jar full of marijuana. Dillon also ran a check on Fellows and found he had an outstanding Nevada County misdemeanor warrant for an alleged battery.
On the way to the county jail, “He said he was actually there to sell marijuana to a man from New York,” Royal said.
Once at the jail, Fellows was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and hashish and possession of the same drugs for sale, being armed with a firearm while attempting to commit a felony and transporting more than one ounce of marijuana.
Fellows had several ounces of marijuana in two different jars and some hashish, Royal said.
The suspect was released Friday morning after posting a $55,000 bail bond.
