Haunted Halloween planned for Wildwood

The children of Lake Wildwood have a real treat in store for them this Halloween.

In addition to trick-or-treating on Oct. 31, the development of the first annual Haunted House is in full swing, with lots of volunteers on board to make sure the children have a great time.

For the record, more than 260 families live in LWW with roughly 450 students in area grammar schools. Adding families with only pre-school or high school students, a best “guesstimate” is more than 500 young people living in LWW — or 8 percent of our population.

The Haunted House will be at the Community Center from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 29 and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 30. This event is geared for kids 8 years old and older, including teens and adults; parents who want to see whether it is appropriate for younger children are invited to a free walk-through from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 28.

Advance tickets are available at the Community Center; $4 for age 15 and younger, and $2 for age 16 and older ($1 extra at the door).

This Haunted House will be scary. There are a lot of adult “children” involved in making this everything they can remember from the haunted houses of their youth.

A big “thank you” goes to Michael Novo and Eric Oxenbol, LWW residents and owners of Talon Construction. These big kids are donating time, construction and countless ideas to making this a success.

Another big “thank you” goes to Diamond Pacific in Grass Valley for donating lumber and supplies for the maze. Other generous donors include Hills Flat Lumber Co. and Home Depot.

If you want to get involved, the Recreation Department can still use some help. Contact them at 432-3260 if you want to dress up in a scary costume, take tickets, hand out candy, help with crowd control, or help with set-up or take-down. It is bound to be a fun experience.

Don't forget about trick-or-treating on Halloween.

Because LWW does not have street lights or sidewalks, for the safety of our children, trick-or-treating is limited to a long stretch of Lake Forest Drive which will be closed from 5:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. from Ringtail up to the LWW Drive.

If your children are grown and you really miss the action on Halloween, it is not too late to help. I volunteered last year and was amazed at how many kids came to the event, how many parents were in costume with their small children and how many groups of teens were out in costumes having a good time.

In addition to homeowners giving out candy, volunteers are needed at tables set up all along the street to provide a little extra light and to hand out candy. Donations of unopened bags of candy are needed and can be dropped off at the office or at the community center.

Have a fun and safe Halloween!
