Lives Lived: Otto Poitz



Otto Louis Poitz died at home in Colfax Oct. 10. He was 71.

A Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21 at St. Canice Catholic Church in Nevada City. Burial will follow at the old Catholic Cemetery at the top of West Broad Street in Nevada City, followed by a reception at the St. Canice Center at the end of Reward Street, also in Nevada City.

He was born Oct. 23, 1937, in San Francisco. He was a twin, and he and his sister, Eileen, were named for their parents.

While attending high school in San Francisco, he worked at The Chronicle and Call Bulletin newspapers. He graduated from Mission Hill School in 1955.

He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and the National Guard.

He moved to Nevada City in 1959 to help Eileen with her chicken ranch in the Lake Vera area. He met Carol Lee Cicogni in Nevada City and they married Nov. 13, 1960, at St. Canice Church.

Mr. Poitz was well-known and admired at the Yuba River Lumber Co., where he worked for 17 years.

He also worked at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital in maintenance and shipping and receiving, drove Pappy's Taxi, and drove busses for Camptonville High School, Nevada County Builders and Pride Industries.

He was chief of the Ophir Hill Fire Department from 1966 to 1968.

He volunteered at St. Joseph's Men's Guild, cleaning the cemetery, maintaining the grounds and serving at functions at St. Canice Hall.

He enjoyed dancing, playing bingo, doing word searches, working puzzles, and watching his favorite teams, the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants. He was a member of the Rough and Ready Square Dancers Club.

He will be remembered for serving the local community and his country.

Mr. Poitz is survived by his wife, Carol Poitz, of Colfax; sister, Eileen of Moreno Valley; daughter, Adinda (Russel) Andresen of Roseville; son, Olaf Poitz of Grass Valley; granddaughter, Alannah Andresen of Roseville and numerous nieces and nephews.



He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Wayne Poitz; mother, Eileen Jule-Donlan-Poitz and father, Otto Poitz.
