Autumn Shindig at North Columbia Schoolhouse Cultural Center

Last year, I got stuck on the ring toss game. For a token, I received five metal rings, smooth and hard in my hands.

The brightly colored board at which to throw them had nine metal hooks — one in each color. The game assistant, wearing a handmade corduroy apron, encouraged me as I stood at the clothesline marker. I concentrated on lightly tossing the ring at just the right speed and angle so that it would slide down and jingle on the hook. Missed! Missed! Ahhh, there it goes! Jingle!

I kept running back to the little red token booth, picking up more wooden tokens and barging back to the games area. I passed the duck-in-a-pond game, the dart board, the mystery box (where you put your hand in and guess what is inside) and the popular bean bag toss, and kept trying at the almost impossible ring toss. Surrounded by children clamoring to collect winning tickets to turn into prizes I ended up winning three times. I think I brought home a little red bullhorn for my efforts that day at the Shindig!

But lest I lead you astray, the Autumn Shindig is not all about games and winning prizes. There is always a foot-stomping revue of local talent on the stage throughout the day with cold, local or organic beer, homemade tamales and cotton candy to eat while you dance around.

Some folks don't even get over to the game area because the entertainment is so fun! This year we have the Ruckrich Family Band, the Belfry Brothers, Alkali Last of the 49ers, the Easy Leaves, Luke Wilson and Maggie McKaig and other live entertainment.

Plus, the Shindig boasts a huge array of crafts, gifts and farm items. Part carnival, harvest fair, farmers market and old-time hoedown the Autumn Shindig has a bit of something for each of us. Where else can you get fresh olive oil, pumpkins, wreaths, a handmade dress and let your children run around playing games, getting their face painted while you watch good music from a comfortable straw bale perch?

This will be the third year of the Autumn Shindig at the NCSCC. A few things have moved around and changed, but you can still participate in sack races and tug-o-war, and come dressed in a funky costume for the parade.

You can still get pie and ice cream and an outfit for your child.

Parking and admission is still free at the Schoolhouse, which is a 135-year-old gathering place on top of an oak and cedar hill with sheep, goats, guinea hens and old barns around it. The newest item this year will be the dunk tank! Come and dunk your friends and neighbors, show off what a good shot you are. Bring your spending purse for your wooden tokens; pack up the friends, kids but leave the pets at home and take Hwy. 49 toward Downieville and turn on Tyler Foote Rd. Don't follow online or GPS directions or you might have a real adventure!

So, come up and have some fun, but watch out, that ring toss game just might catch you too!
