Editors note: The Pilates Place is a fitness studio in downtown Grass Valley owned and operated by Roxanne Cohen who answered questions about her business for The Union readers.
What is your specialty?
Pilates-based physical therapy
Describe your services.
As a licensed physical therapist, I offer exercises for physical therapy based problems as well as Pilates-based fitness training. I provide my clients and students with a wide variety of services that may include private sessions, group mat or equipment classes and specialty workshops.
How long have you been in Nevada County?
I've been here for 10 years. I worked out of my home for five years before opening the Pilates Place three years ago.
What sets you apart from other studios?
We specialized in Pilates, thus the name “The Pilates Place.” We offer a comprehensive Pilates experience with state-of-the-art equipment in a personal yet professional environment in downtown Grass valley.
We boast the only instructors in Nevada County certified by Pilates Method Alliance. Our staff of six instructors has a combined 50 years of teaching Pilates and more than 145 years of teaching movement; their ages range from 32 to 62 years. We work with a range of people from post-operative clients to elite athletes.
We believe in being active in our community to promote fitness and health. Our most recent project is our upcoming Tour of Grass Valley for Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation's Project Pink (see box).
For that event, we are emphasizing the fitness aspect to prevention of all disease and the role fitness plays in recovery.
Are you accepting new clients?
Always.
Describe your fee structure.
Our prices range from $9 for a mat class to $18 for an equipment class to $55 to $80 for a private session. We have a beginner's package covering four mat classes and two private sessions for $130.
Describe your background.
After managing health clubs and training aerobic instructors for six years, I went to Northwestern University in Chicago to get my degree in physical therapy. I have been a physical therapist for 19 years, working in all settings of physical therapy including hospital and home care.
I recently completed a year-long program of manual orthopedic physical therapy.
Perhaps my most important experience is being active in many sports and dance, injuring myself and needing to rehab as quickly and efficiently as possible.
I am a Polestar-certified Pilates rehabilitation specialist. I train every year with Pilates master Ron Fletcher and am licensed to teach Fletcher spine corrector and Fletcher towel work. In 2007, I earned my PMA certification.
