Local Roundup: Colfax frosh football tops rival Bear River

The Bear River High School freshman football team was caught playing catch-up against crossriver and Pioneer Valley League rival Colfax High School Thursday.

Bear River gave up a touchdown to running back Austin Mulderrig on Colfax's opening drive. The Bruins shut the Falcons down the rest of the way, but never found paydirt for themselves in a 7-0 league-opening defeat.

“We played solid defense all game, but we did get tired at the end,” Bear River coach Dick Werntz said. “Cody Heard and Travis McKnight stopped the Falcons running game and Austin Dowling's interception was big.”

Bear River (1-2) got the ball at their own with 1:47 to go in the fourth quarter. The drive and game looked to be over when starting quarterback Dillon Smith went down with an arm injury. Werntz called for back-up quarterback Hayden Macklin to take over the final drive. Macklin helped move the ball to the Colfax 23-yard line, with 8 seconds left on the clock.

With enough time for one last play, the Bruins looked to throw the ball, but the Falcons sacked Macklin for a 12-yard loss and the victory.

“Macklin came in and did exactly what we asked of him. He played with great poise,” Werntz said.

Colfax improved to 2-2 with the victory.

The Bruins JV and varsity football teams also clash with the Falcons this week, with the junior varsity kicking off at 5:30 p.m. today.

Nevada Union 39, Natomas 0

The Nevada Union frosh football team started homecoming week off with a 39-0 shutout of Natomas Thursday, moving to 4-0 on the season.

Tanner Vallejo started the scoring with a nine-yard run in the first quarter. Hank Humphers scored the second touchdown on a two-yard run. The third touchdown in the first quarter was a 26-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Cota to Sean Zuccaro to make the score 19-0. Cota and Zuccaro repeated the feat in the second quarter to make the halftime score 25-0.

Cota threw this third touchdown pass to Zuccaro in the third quarter, before Humphers added the final touchdown on an eight-yard run.

“The offensive line played great again giving Cota time to throw and opening big holes for the running backs,” said NU coach Greg Brown.

Vallejo was the leading tackler with nine stops, followed by Humphers and Ian Davis with six tackles each. Michael Buonarati made three point-after kicks, while fumble recoveries were made by Vallejo, Buonarati and Chris Garrison.
