Local Roundup: Falcons sweep Victory in CVCL match

Taking to the floor without defensive stalwart Molly Huusfeldt, Forest Lake Christian's varsity volleyball team fought through three games for a clean sweep of Victory Christian Tuesday night.

Huusfeldt, who was injured in last week's loss to Vacaville Christian, is likely to be sidelined for a couple of weeks due to a pulled calf muscle.

“She's kind of the rock of our defense,” said FLC coach Travis Smith. “It's a hole in our lineup that we really cannot fill.”

But the Falcons had a pair juniors step up when needed Tuesday, as FLC scored a 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 Central Valley Christian League win.

Junior Amanda Timmerman had three kills and block, while classmate Madeline Zea added four kills and six digs.

Senior Caitlin Hanson had five kills and 10 digs, while Laura Ritchart had five kills and four blocks and Morghan Pomeroy totaled five kills and three blocks.

FLC (5-4 overall, 2-1 CVCL) travels to Woodland Christian Thursday.

JV: FLC 2, Victory Christian 0

Forest Lake's junior varsity scored a 25-10, 25-21 win over Victory Christian.

Maggie Aubuchon had eight kills and six blocks, while fellow middle blocker Emily English had six kills and three blocks.

FLC's JV improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the CVCL with the win.

Bear River's junior varsity girls also beat Oakmont, scoring a 7-5 victory.

Beth Nelson led the Bruins with four goals, while Andrea Bock, Cindy Solomon and Rebecca Volek each scored one goal.

Girls: Woodcreek 6, Nevada Union 5

Nevada Union's varsity girls gave Woodcreek, the Sierra Foothill League's second-place team, a scare Tuesday in the Timberwolves home pool, but fell short of the victory.

Angela Murphy had three goals to lead the Miners, while Natalie Fernandez and Julie Hindman each also had a goal. Devin Blaney drew praise from NU coach Craig Zetterberg for her play at goalie.

NU's junior varsity scored an 11-6 win Tuesday over the T'wolves, as Rachel Brindley scored six goals and Mariah Chambers added four goals.
