The branch has no formal dues, but its incidental expenses are covered by an annual voluntary member contribution of $20. One is not required to live in Alta Sierra to join – many members live elsewhere in the area.

Early Risers Toastmasters
“The monster is sick, we have to stop feeding it.” Quoting The Grapes of Rath was one device that led Sharon Delgado to be voted Best Speaker (for being the speaker who best met her goals) at this week's Early Risers Toastmasters meeting. Sharon educated the group and shared her views regarding the ongoing history of large corporations in relation to the condition of our economy. Her toastmaster assignment was to thoroughly research a topic using facts, statistics, examples and illustrations to support her views.
Toastmasters is a terrific way to have a great time and meet interesting people while developing speaking and leadership skills. As an internationally recognized program that documents progress with awards and certification, many people find membership a great resume builder as well. Give it a try, we love guests!
Early Risers Toastmasters has breakfast meetings every Tuesday at the Trolley Junction Restaurant in Nevada City. We begin at 6:30 a.m. and end before 8 a.m.

Alta Sierra SIR
The Sept. 1 speaker for the Alta Sierra SIR organization was Nevada County Sheriff, Keith Royal. Sheriff Royal reported on law enforcement conditions in our beautiful part of the world. With the special diligence his staff has, just based on our mountains being a prime location for clandestine marijuana-growing operations – and the associated crime that criminal activity brings, in addition to the open country expanse between the larger communities of the county, his is a relatively unique management challenge among California law enforcement executives. His talk brought much interest, particularly considering the large number of very good questions and concerns brought up by our members during the question and answer period.
Sons In Retirement (SIR) is a California-based organization of almost 20,000, with local branches made up of normally 100 to 150 persons. It is a non-political, non-religious social group of retired men, whose primary mission is simply to socialize and enjoy the company of one another. Most branches, including the Alta Sierra branch, have a number of sub-groups made up of members with common interests, such as bowling, golf, fishing, travel, and computer technology.
The Alta Sierra SIR meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Alta Sierra Country Club, for which each participant purchases an excellent meal for $15 and are provided interesting speakers of pertinent subjects. The branch has no formal dues, but its incidental expenses are covered by an annual voluntary member contribution of $20. One is not required to live in Alta Sierra to join – many members live elsewhere in the area.
The group's speaker for their Oct. 6 luncheon will be Nevada County District Attorney Cliff Newell, who will share his perspective of our current condition. Mr. Newell is responsible for the activities of a staff is located in two offices, Nevada City and Truckee, and consists of one full time Deputy District Attorney and a full time clerical support staff of two in Truckee and, in Nevada City, there are nine full time Deputy District Attorneys and an Assistant District Attorney, three full-time investigators, two part-time investigators, all of whom can also be assigned to Truckee cases, as well as a clerical staff of 11 who support them.
Any retired man interested in joining the Alta Sierra branch of SIR or in attending a luncheon is encouraged to call 272-4970 or 273-6601.
