A North San Juan man remains in custody after allegedly assaulting a 9-year-old boy and forcing a standoff that lasted past midnight Monday.
Nevada County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call at about 7:30 p.m. that a man in the 27000 block of Cherokee Street had hit a 9-year-old boy with a 2-by-6 board and kicked another child.
The man, identified as Russell Robert Prinz, 43, allegedly threw the board at the boy and struck him in the shoulder, cutting him, Sheriff Keith Royal said.
“Deputies tried to take him into custody and a struggle ensued,” Royal said, adding that Prinz is 6-foot-1 and weighs 300 pounds.
Prinz was tasered twice “with little effect,” Royal said. “He pulled the probes out and continued to fight.”
Prinz then ran into his house and barricaded himself inside, Royal said. A hostage negotiation team and the special enforcement detail were called to the scene, but were unable to convince Prinz to come out of the house.
“About midnight, we forced entry into the house and took him into custody,” Royal said.
One officer injured his knee in during the melee, he added.
