The Del Oro Theatre kicks off a new series of classic films shown in the main auditorium this Monday with the 1952 musical “Singin' in the Rain”. For the next eight weeks you'll have the chance to see some of the greatest movies ever made up on the big screen with a live theater audience.
Movies have changed dramatically in the last 50 years. Now, many of us are more accustomed to watching movies at home on television than in a theater with a live audience. Because of that, acting and directing has changed, and many movies are made knowing that most people will never see it on the big screen.
For the next eight weeks you can transport yourself back to the 50s and 60s when movies were made to be watched on a 30-foot screen, when actors played their parts big and bold, when music and dance was better than Broadway, and magic was everywhere. Experience the majestic landscapes and sweeping vistas of “Lawrence of Arabia”. Laugh and sing along with Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds in “Singin' in the Rain”. Let your heart be swept away with Natalie Wood in Westside Story.
In addition to enjoying some great old movies, know that your ticket is going to a good cause. The Classics series is a fundraiser for the Del Oro mural that is currently in progress on the back of the building. World class mural artist, John Pugh, is creating a work of art in his signature trompe l'oeil style, that features a shimmering Yuba River cascading into an underground mine shaft and lighting up the faces of four miners.
The image is revealed behind what looks like a cutaway of the actual Del Oro building. The mural should be completed in the next few months.
Classic Movies on the Big Screen will show every Monday evening at 7 p.m. and Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Sept. 21 through Nov. 10. Regular admission will apply: $8.50 for adults and $6.50 for seniors and children and all matinee seats.
Discount series passes will be available for purchase at the Del Oro box office and at the BriarPatch Co-op. A $50 pass is good for eight adult admissions, $40 for eight child/senior/matinee admissions. A four admissions card is also available for $25 adults, and $20 ch/snr/matinee.
