Ursal and JoAnne Snapp (pictured above and on right) of Grass Valley celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a dinner party at their home with their daughters Sandy Forrest, Sara Nadeau, Carrie Lewis and their son, Jerel and their families. They enjoyed a home-grown ham dinner with all the fixings served on the patio.
They met in Merrill, Ore., when Ursal (Jack “Ginger” Snapp) returned from the Army Air Corps after World War II and was beginning his professional boxing career and JoAnne was finishing high school. They were married Aug. 28, 1949, at the Home Ranch in Merrill, Ore. They honeymooned along the Oregon Coast.
Attending college, Ursal received his master's from USC, and they both got their teaching credentials. They began working in Cloverdale before moving to Nevada County. Ursal began teaching and coaching at Nevada City High School, then Grass Valley and then at the new Nevada Union High School. He was a favorite teacher for many, a successful coach and maintained a boxing program at NU until he retired in 1987. JoAnne was very active in the community with Girl Scouts, and many years with 4-H leading the sheep project. JoAnne is a loving caregiver, enjoys her yard, reading and is a very talented artist.
The Snapps have seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
