Nevada City Mayor Reinette Senum is up for a $10,000 grant from Nau, an environmentally friendly clothing supplier, after being nominated as a “change agent.”
Senum is currently in fourth place out of 293 individuals who are nominated for “those who instigate lasting, positive change in their communities,” according to the company's Web site. She's got 493 votes so far.
Senum's friend, Nancy Shanteau, was the one to nominate her for the grant.
“Mayor Reinette Senum is leading Nevada City as it becomes a magnet community, modeling realistic, attainable sustainable living,” Shanteau told Nau.
It's a two-step process for Senum to land the grant, a much needed boost for the mayor who currently does not earn a salary. She would have to remain within the top-5 vote-getters, and then undergo and an evaluation process by Nau, Senum said.
“They're a very cool clothing company, sustainable and everything,” Senum said. “And they just want to help people who are helping the planet.
“It's just so inspiring to read all of these great people's stories and to be nominated among them,” Senum continued.
Senum has done her part to secure the grant by promoting her participation on her Twitter account and her personal Web site. She's provided a form letter for supporters to vote for her in the process.
“A $10,000 Grant for Change award allows Mayor Reinette to galvanize global attention and make our sustainable future (in) Nevada City a place we can visit,” Shanteau said.
