Woolman Semester chef Benjamin Rose, has won the “Golden Carrot,” an award given on behalf of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine to promote healthy eating.
“We're awarding Benjamiin Rose $500, and we're also giving $500 to benefit the Wooman Semester's food service program, inclusive of a student-run organic garden,” according to a press release announcing the award.
Rose's Golden Carrot will be formally announced to the national public Aug. 20.
Woolman Semester is 16-week program for high school students from all over the country, according to the school's Web site. It's based in Nevada City, promoting peace, social justice and sustainable living. Rose was honored because his menu had vegan options, a salad bar, international samplings.
“By supplying plenty of fruits, vegetables and low-fat vegetarian meals, the Woolman Semester is helping students understand the link betwen what they eat and their health,” said PCRM nutrionist Kathryn Strong.
The committee established the Golden Carrot awards in 2004 to recognize food service professionals doing an exceptional job of improving healthy school lunches, according to the release.
