Nevada County's unemployment rate crept up again in June, but at rates slower than in the past year.
Joblessness for the month is 11.4 percent, up two-tenths of a percent from the previous month, according to preliminary statistics from the state Employment Development Department.
California's unemployment rate is unchanged from the previous month at 11.6 percent, and the nationwide unemployment rate is 9.5 percent.
Construction jobs are expected to pick up in Nevada County with the beginning of a $13.2 million major remodeling and new building project at Sierra College's Grass Valley campus. Sierra Foothills Construction of Grass Valley has started on the remodeling portion of the project.
The job outlook will depend in part on how fast stimulus money flows to Nevada County, said county Economic Resource Council Executive Director Gil Mathew.
But while construction at Sierra College ramps up, Montreal-based Miranda Technologies, a maker of hardware and software for the television broadcast industry, will transfer 11 manufacturing jobs from a facility in Grass Valley to Canada in October.
“That's going to be a hurt that we're going to feel later,” Mathew said.
In December 2008, Miranda sent $40 million to buy NVision, a maker of digital signal routers that spun off from the famed Grass Valley Group. Some NVision employees were laid off in February.
Miranda officials could not be reached for comment.
While the county awaits the federal stimulus funds, joblessness could reach 12 percent, Mathew predicted. It would be the highest unemployment rate in Nevada County in three decades.
When money from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act does come, the ERC will be ready with a $13 million project to provide broadband service to Nevada County. The project could employ up to 50 people for as long as two years, but the funds may not come before the end of the year, Mathew said.
Except for the month between March and April, Nevada County's unemployment rate has increased steadily since January 2009, topping 10 percent in February
Before this year, Nevada County's unemployment rate hadn't been in double digits since February 1993.
