Thanks for Deli Night
Reader Fieni Verdooner says the New York Deli Night on Aug. 1 was a great success, and she sends her thanks to everyone for coming. It sold out, with proceeds benefiting the Nevada County Jewish Community Center in Grass Valley.
We heard from a local butcher about looking around for kosher pastrami, and finally having to order it from the East Coast. Yum!
Fieni also says the regular Shabbat services at 7:30 p.m. Friday have resumed.
Radio operators sharpen their skills
Local amateur radio fans helped out with a charitable bike race recently.
They're members of the Nevada County Amateur Radio Club, ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service). The event was a 24 hour fundraiser for Christian Encounters ministries the weekend of July 24-25.
Ham radio operators tracked the riders through Loyalton, Vinton and Beckwourth using a system of digital communication in which information is transmitted in short bursts using a combination of computer and radio signals.
A total of 14 licensed hams volunteered to sharpen their radio communication skills, which we'd all be thankful for during a disaster. Amateur radio has been the only source of contact between police, fire, and hospitals during disasters when all other means of emergency communication were lost.
For more information on amateur radio licensing and the part ham radio plays in disaster preparedness, visit NCARC.org or ARRL.org.
Firefighters donate to Hospice, blind services
The Los Angeles City Firefighter's Grass Valley Association recently donated $3,200 to Hospice of the Foothills and another $3,200.00 to Sierra Services for the Blind.
Members raised the money in their daily events and Saturday pit barbecues.
“It has been our tradition to share the money we raise between the Los Angeles Firemen's Windows, Orphans and Disabled Firefighters Fund and two local community groups that serve those of us who enjoy living in the Sierra Foothills,” reader and association treasurer Vincent Cardinale says.
In May, more than 400 local association members gathered at the Nevada County Fairgrounds for a reunion.
