Ghidotti High School junior Claire Mars (pictured) has been selected for the Page Program in Washington D.C. to work for Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Granite Bay, for the fall semester.

“I'm very excited. This is a great opportunity” Claire said after McClintock called to notify her of the position. “I will miss my family, friends and my dog, Panda.”

Claire, 16, participated for four years in a home study program offered through the Placer County Office of Education. She transferred to Ghidotti Early College High School in Grass Valley for her freshman year, drawn by its academic reputation.

Claire is focusing her studies in Spanish and art, and she enjoys the smaller school feel at Ghidotti and being an integral part of the school body, she said. She plans a career in translating for young children.

In the U.S. House of Representatives Page Program, high school students work for their congressman for a semester in their junior year. The students transfer their academic studies to a school set up for the pages and live in a page dormitory.

All applicants must complete an in-depth application, write two essays and provide letters of recommendation.

Claire will be leaving for her five-month page experience in Washington D.C. on Aug. 29. She is the daughter of Donna and Howard Hendrich of southern Nevada County.
