Because a second embezzlement case has been filed against Sara Nicole Smith, her attorney requested a postponement of her next hearing. It was rescheduled for 1 p.m. Aug. 6.
In the first case, Smith, 35, the former office manager at Cornerstone Realty in Nevada City, pleaded not guilty to five counts of grand theft by embezzlement totaling more than $340,000. She allegedly embezzled the money over five years from the company's business account.
Smith started working at Cornerstone in 2004 and was in charge of paying bills and keeping the accounts current. She allegedly embezzled about $341,000 in funds from Cornerstone between January 2005 and March 27, 2009. Smith previously was convicted of embezzlement in August 2005 in Washoe County, Nev., according to a declaration filed by the district attorney's office.
A second case alleges Smith embezzled funds from Cornerstone after it was sold to Select Properties, owned by Dan Jacuzzi
Smith, who is being represented by lawyer David Alkire, is out of custody on $60,000 bail.
In other court news:
David Bledsoe, 19, of North San Juan, was sentenced to one year in jail after pleading no contest to felony assault after stabbing his brother seven times on Feb. 19. His brother suffered stab wounds to the chest, abdomen and throat.
Bledsoe originally was committed to a state mental hospital, but he was found to be competent June 18. He was sentenced July 17 to one year in jail with 222 days credit for time served and good behavior. He is scheduled for review Oct. 1 to be assessed for placement into a “Moving On” program.
He received five years probation; he also must participate in mental health counseling and comply with an order to take prescription medications.
Zaid Sinawi, the suspect in a 2005 Cascade Shores alleged rape, was sentenced to one year in jail with credit for 89 days served, as well as five years probation, after pleading no contest to assault with intent to commit rape. The assault occurred on Oct. 1, 2005, in the 23000 block of Arctic Close. No suspect was identified and the victim, whose name was not released, died of unrelated causes in September 2006. Sinawi was linked to the crime by DNA and arrested in 2008.
